Welcome Traveller,
Good Morning & Happy Friday,
Would you scream if you see a giant albino rat & an otter scuttering about on your flight ? People on a recent VietJet flight got more than they bargained for when they saw staff on board attempt to catch these animals after they were discovered on the 3-hour journey between Bangkok, and Taipei.
After landing, Taiwan officials discovered a marmot, 2 otters, 28 star turtles, and 2 mysterious rodents hidden in bags, smuggled by a "not co-operative" Chinese passenger. She now faces a fine of up to £25,000 under regulations relating to the control and prevention of infectious disease. So when your packing skills include otters and star turtles, maybe it's time to reconsider your life choices – and your travel habits. Linked in Watch.

Germany Wants YOUR Expertise!
Thinking of starting a new life in a foreign country ? Germany, in its quest to tackle a labor shortage, has unveiled an exciting new points-based visa system. This means, if you're a skilled worker, your ticket to this land of fairy-tale castles and cutting-edge technology just got stamped.
Germany’s calling skilled foreign workers to combat labour shortages in the country & will be introduced in 3 stages starting in November 2023, March 2024 and June 2024.
The new law aims to attract skilled foreign workers & combat labour shortages in the country & will be introduced in 3 stages starting in November 2023, March 2024 and June 2024.
Why is Germany changing its immigration policies?
In 2022, 1.74 million vacant positions (an all-time high) were found for labour throughout Germany as per Institute for Employment Research (IAB).
In July last year, almost half of all companies were affected by staff shortages, forcing them to slow down their operations as per Munich-based research institute IFO,
“We know that we can only guarantee our future, the efficiency of our economy and the efficiency of our social security systems if we have enough skilled workers at our disposal,” said Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
How they’re going to do it ?
Germany is introducing a new 'opportunity card' named the 'chancenkarte’. The program employs a points-based system, considering your qualifications, work experience, age, German language proficiency, and connections to Germany, such as family residing in the country. Which will help entry of skilled individuals who do not yet have a work contract in Germany.
Each year, quotas will be established based on industry needs. To apply for the program, individuals need to meet at least three out of the four specified criteria.
A degree or vocational training
3 years of professional experience
Language skills or a previous stay in Germany
35 years old or younger
Current Situation - Until now, non-EU citizens wanting to work in Germany needed a job offer first. Although there's a job seeker visa, it's a slow process.
However, the 'chancenkarte' is changing this. Now, citizens from specific countries can visit Germany visa-free for 90 days but only for short-term work. The 'chancenkarte' simplifies things. It lets people come and search for jobs or apprenticeships in Germany without applying from abroad. This means you can look for work while in the country. One condition: they must show they can cover their living expenses during this period.
Do you qualify ?
Germany is specifically seeking skilled craftspeople, electrical engineers, IT specialists, carers, nurses, catering and hospitality professionals. Other in-demand occupations listed on the government website include physicians and scientists. A shortage of metallurgy workers and builders has previously been reported.
Opportunities in German Industries that are worst hit by staff shortages
1. Highest Shortage - Service sector is the worst hit - especially the accommodation and event industries an IFO survey reveals.
2. This is followed by warehousing and storage, service providers, and manufacturing - particularly in the food, data processing equipment, machinery and metal manufacturing sectors.
3. Many retail businesses, construction companies and wholesalers have also reported staff shortages.
4. IT specialists with relevant job experience will receive EU Blue Cards even if they do not possess a university degree, as per German news channel DW.
5. Other in-demand occupations listed on the government website include physicians and scientists. A shortage of metallurgy workers and builders has previously been reported.
6. Lowest shortage - The pharmaceutical and chemical industries report the lowest shortage of skilled workers. The automotive and mechanical engineering industries are also suffering less than other sectors.
